A colossal colouring book for the fishing village!
I worked alongside Korean Artist Seung youn Lee to transform the fishing village of Siheung, South Korea, into a colouring book. Inside a large fishing warehouse we draped the walls with printed fabric and filled each giant fish tank with printed wooden boards which could be sat on and coloured whilst socialising. We invited the community to come and colour to complete the artwork - a temporary monument to celebrate the fishing community.
Prior to the initiation of this project myself and Seung youn had spent a week filming a series of shows with the Korean TV network MBC. We were filmed living on an island with fishers; going out on boats and catching fish together, eating, socialising, and sleeping. I was struck by the patterns of the shells and the shapes of the fish, alongside the patterns of the lives of the men and women.
The Arts Council England funded us to collaborate with British band Goldhawk who arrived from London and began working to record sounds from around Korea which could form a soundscape for the exhibition, incorporating feedback loops which allowed the locals to participate.
