Korean Story Spirits - Silk Scarf (100% Chiffon silk)

£150.00

Series of only 100 wearable art prints - when they’re gone, they’re gone!

This 100% Chiffon silk scarf features illustrations from the Mother Shamans of Neo Joseon series. Each of the characters featured on the scarf is a story spirit; from the founding bear of Korea, to the hideous angel who vomits beautiful silk, or the mischievous toilet spirit, or the mouse which ate your fingernails to become your clone and take over your life, or the nine-tailed fox which sought to kiss you and then eat your liver in the night. Each of these characters represents a wonderful adventure taken from Korean folklore. The idea for this scarf came from the story of a young boy who collected story spirits in a bag, refusing to share them, but story spirits are meant to be shared, so they ganged up against him and plotted his death. With this limited edition scarf, you can display all your stories, so that they won’t plot your murder - which is also quite practical.

I made this scarf on fine Chiffon silk because of its etherial nature, thin and delicate, so the spirits could overlap and drift in and out of focus.

  • Limited edition of 100 prints

  • 6mm Chiffon scarves

  • hand rolled hem

  • 180x110 cm

  • Unisex

I’ve always seen clothing as an opportunity for a kind of 3D canvas. In particular the surface of the silk scarf presents so much opportunity for artists; unlike gallery paining or prints, these wearable surfaces are mobile and adorn any space you enter. The customer is the curator, and the work alters their visual identity. I’m so honoured when I see someone selecting my work to wear.

Back in 2016 the studio I co-founded, The Bite Back Movement, was commissioned to make an Art Product range for Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA). I was so excited to transform some of my much larger installation artworks into limited edition scarves, and we focused on creating the highest quality scarves with 100% silk, hand-rolled hems and editions of only 100. We sold-out after 2 days and I’ve been passionate about the medium ever since.
